Sourdough Montessori School opened its doors in 1997. The school is a cozy country home nestled in the foothills of Sourdough Canyon.
Upon your arrival to the school you will first notice our enchanting playground which is filled with large old trees, mature bushes and sunny open spaces where children run and play. A wide paved bike path winds along the perimeter of the yard. Sturdy wood forts, climbing equipment, gardens, a rabbit run and swings complete the playground. Through the unstructured nature of outdoor play, children learn to develop many important socialization skills, while also having a healthy opportunity to exercise their growing minds and bodies.
Inside our 3,000 square foot school, you will find open, light filled rooms with thoughtfully selected Montessori activities, as well as areas for art projects, science exercises, story and circle time. For the little ones, there is a special nap room with raised cots. For the older children there is a dedicated kindergarten area with age appropriate materials and learning tools. There is a comfortable eating space and ample cubbies that will easily hold the many things children need to store during their busy day (hats, coats, boots, mittens, slippers, books, art work, etc.). Through both the structure of the school and the Montessori program, we have strived to create an environment that is safe and nurturing for our children and their families.
The curriculum offers lessons in practical life, sensory exploration, science, math, computers, language (including Spanish classes), reading, writing and art. We also offer Kindermusic (a music and dance program for children) and a “movement” program to enhance coordination. The curriculum is supported by a full compliment of Montessori materials, books, plants, animals and other equipment appropriate for a state-of-the art program.
